NHS executives bag hefty 6.1% pay rise as nurses’ pay packets are hit

NHS chiefs pocketed pay rises nearly four times higher than nurses over the past two years.

The Royal College of Nursing said figures obtained under the Freedom of Information Act showed the salaries of NHS executives had soared by 6.1% since 2012, while nurses’ pay had gone up by just 1.6%.

RCN general secretary Dr Peter Carter said: “This is yet another kick in the teeth for hardworking nursing staff.

“Failing to pay nurses a decent wage will cause many more to consider leaving the profession, which is bad for the NHS and bad for the country.

“The Government should do the honourable thing and give nurses a decent wage.”

The salaries of NHS trust executives is fixed locally while nursing staff pay is set nationally. Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt even rejected just a 1% pay rise for frontline staff.

The RCN report said that in the past 12 months at least two NHS trust chief executives had received bonuses of at least £40,000 – more than a senior ward sister earns in a year.




The average nurse earns around £30,000 but a NHS trust chief executive can get up to £260,000.

The RCN said many nurses had to go to food banks and apply for cash hardship grants to help cover essentials such as ­children’s school uniforms.

One emergency team assistant working in London, who has been qualified for six years, said she had been forced to move back with her parents.

The 29-year-old, who earns less than £20,000 a year and asked not to be identified, said: “I love my job but it comes at a cost. I’m 29 but cannot afford any sort of life outside work.”

Last month an inquiry by the Daily Mirror revealed senior NHS staff got £166million in non-basic pay such as bonuses, overtime and other extras in 2013 – a rise of 36%.

    “The salaries of NHS trust executives is fixed locally while nursing staff pay is set nationally. ” Which is why Nurses have effectively had a pay cut over the last ten years and the admin staff have awarded themselves massive raises. the trust system needs to be quashed and the return of district health authorities with less people getting paid less doing a far more efficient job of it.

    NHS trust execs are all the chosen ones of this Government chosen to baste their own turkeys & nobody else’s . Whilst dear the old labour party grease and oil the bird .

    Silly question, I know, but supposedly we are all suffering austerity, and we are all in it together – who do executives need more pay? Can’t they manage on their 6-figure salaries?
