As most of you will know by now, the Labour NEC met yesterday initially to determine whether or not Jeremy Corbyn could feature on the leadership ballot. They ruled that he can, but they simultaneously ruled that those members who joined after 12th January 2016 would not be eligible to take part in the election. Additionally, a charge of £25 will be levied to register as a Labour Supporter, a significantly higher fee than the £3 previously charged. At a time when British people are once again reinvigorated by politics and political change, and clamouring to take an active part in their party of choice, they are being denied this chance. Jeremy Corbyn has inspired unprecedented growth in the Labour party membership, and those new members, and those who wish to vote in the leadership contest, should not be denied a chance to vote.

The figure of £25 is a discriminatory price that will clearly exclude a great many from being able to take part in this vote. People who wish to vote will need to register as supporters and pay £25 between 18th-20th July in order to secure the right to vote.

Unlike the tories, we have a plan A and a plan B …

I met the fabulous Lauren Ashby on Twitter on 2 days ago, following the announcement by Labour NEC.

Lauren, myself and some other tweeters said we would gladly pay the £25 to a Labour supporter to enable them to vote.

This culminated in Lauren setting up a Just Giving page to accept donations, with a view to disbursing them to the unwaged, low waged, pensioner or student who wanted to vote but was effectively barred from doing so by the punitive £25 charge which they were unable to afford.

We all know why the NEC did this of course, it was because their final attempt to oust Jeremy Corbyn had failed and so the only thing left to them was to attack the new members (most of whom supported Jeremy Corbyn) who had recently joined in their thousands.

Before I provide a link to the Just Giving page, I would just like to say this … Lauren and I are both private individuals with a strong sense of decency and democracy who felt we had to DO SOMETHING.

We are aware that there may be concerns that the people who claim the £25 may vote for a person we might not necessarily admire (she said trying to avoid looking at Angela Eagle and Owen Smith) but hey, that’s democracy folks and money should not be a barrier to it.

The way the Just Giving site works is like this; the monies donated are released after a month of setting up the page, which means that payments to individuals will need to be made before 20 July 2016, which is the cut off date to register and pay your £25

I am going to stump up the cash up front and then get reimbursed from the site once the 30 days are up. The money is coming from my “Rainy Day Fund” because this to me looks very much like a rainy day.

Lauren and I will probably request from the people who claim the £25 via the site, for a screen shot on their phone of some documentary evidence to show that they are unwaged, low waged a pensioner or student. Once seen by either Lauren or I it will be immediately deleted to protect privacy. Our word is our bond.

We will also need to establish that the person claiming the £25 is a Labour supporter, possibly by viewing their Twitter or Facebook timeline; this is to prevent rogue tory supporters hijacking the leadership ballot (cynical, moi, you betcha)

Some of the comments on the site from the people who donated are heartwarming, inspirational and some even made me cry … read them for yourself; but all of those who donated have restored my faith in human nature.

In less than 48 hours of the site going live, these wonderful, awesome, beautiful people donated enough to fund the £25 fee for 125 people … how brilliant is that!

For those of you who wish to donate, please do and for those of you who wish to claim the £25, please scroll to bottom of the just giving page, click on contact fundraiser and send Lauren  a message or you can direct message her on Twitter @Oisille if you’d prefer.

You’ll remember I said there was also a plan B…

Well, it seems that Labour NEC are in breach of contract, as new members (those who registered after January 2016) were “sold” their membership with the entitlement to vote in any leadership election. The new ruling has been backdated by 6 months. This is potentially a criminal offence and the NEC may be liable to a fine and or prosecution. They will most certainly have to refund the subscriptions of those affected.

To form a contract, the law states;

A contractual relationship is evidenced by (1) an offer, (2) acceptance of the offer, and a (3) valid (legal and valuable) consideration. Each party to a contract acquires rights and duties relative to the rights and duties of the other parties. However, while all parties may expect a fair benefit from the contract (otherwise courts may set it aside as inequitable) it does not follow that each party will benefit to an equal extent.

The complaint has been lodged and Trading Standards are currently investigating … watch this space.

To cheer you up after all the shenanigins, I thought I’d post this musical tribute to those tory MPs who got sacked or resigned from the Conservative Cabinet today … (p.s. check out the VERY young Paul Simon)

UPDATE

Very bad news , I’m afraid. To say I am devastated is an understatement. – this letter from Lauren (the fundraiser) posted on the Just Giving page explains:-

With the Labour Party NEC trying every dirty trick to prevent the ‘ordinary’ people from voting for their leader, this is an intelligent and generous method for getting more people in as full Labour Party members.

Do NOT pay for the vote. Buy them food. Allow them to use your card to register but get the money from them. Then give them £25 for food. That way there is no come back about “buying votes”

How wonderful. How absolutely selfless of you both. This did make me cry. I am at a loss to describe how angry and sad I am with the behaviour of our PLP, NEC and MPs. They want to sideline us ordinary members as if our opinions, views and wishes are not worth considering. I don’t have much but I will donate £25. Keep fighting – June

  6. The NEC aspires to Blackmail trying to disenfranchise genuine Labour supporters who where told they could vote after
Purchasing their £ 3.00 membership fee.
A few people predisposed to the Blaireites coupe behind closed doors had the audacity without warning and I reference to any one else to seek to change this.
It is symptomatic of the dirty tricks department of the Blairite fifth columnist to try along with their media friends to destroy the Labour Party!
At a time when the Conservatives unchallenged seek yet again to change the country to end to their will!

  7. Dennis O'Malley (- previously a £3 supporter to vote for Corbyn and at present still not a member) says:

This is a delightful initiative. It would be good to see the NEC come up with a compromise- maybe £10 to be a supporter; that would be more reasonable, but I guess it’s unlikely to happen. (I assume the original £3 was calculated merely to cover administrative costs.) Two things to bear in mind- 1) if the election does proceed as currently proposed, the result will widely be seen as illegitimate (- whether of not JC wins) and 2) even with the rules skewed as at present, JC will win if there are 2 other contenders (- as there currently are). Only if one of those withdraws from the contest will JC’s success be seriously in doubt, surely?…

Dennis, not sure where you’re getting your figure from. There is a lot of disinformation going around (using techniques from USa to disenfranchise Sanders voters). There is no chance of JC not wining is all his supporters vote for him. There are literally millions of Trade Union voters who can be activated. It was a “cunning plan” t stop Union block voting to give them one member one vote, too, on the understanding that Union members would be too disinterested to bother voting. . With the 10 main Unions officially backing JC, and the prospect of many being motivated as never before (as we have seen with new LP members), we do not need to fret.

    Well done you guys!

Im also concerned about how ‘discussion and debate’ has effectively been closed down within Constituency Labour Parties. I have received a number of ‘statements’, one from our Chair, inferring as much. In my constituency, along with the ban on official meetings, we have received the following:

Our CLP has a coffee morning, meet the team arranged, this was arranged some weeks ago prior to all the coup activity etc. Our chair now suggests that this meeting should not be used to debate as it is only supposed to be an opportunity to meet the office team etc…. The justification for the ban is said to be because of ‘abuse’ etc…

Have just received an email from the PLP re voting rites etc, and about the voting in of 6 CLPs to the PLP, and yet I have no idea whos who and what side of the fence they sit on etc… I dont even know what side of the fence my Chair, or Secretary is on.

How can any voting be considered fair, informed and democratic if we are starved of information, or the opportunity to discuss etc???

    feels terribly wrong to me…

Please consider reimbursing £22 rather than the £25 so as to restore the previous cost, putting all voters on the same deal.

I’m still struggling to find any basis for the alleged “abuse” and the CLP and branch meetings. Are they seriously saying our meetings are being used to organise violence and abuse? Of course not, because it’s a chicken way of doing things like blaming JC for the Brexit vote. All this had been long planned a Nd there is even a tweet from an NEC candidate in this week’s elections (that might have been discussed at mtgs?) allegedly showing the plan to ban CLP and branch mtgs was already in place 3 months ago. The more they plot the more there is in that length of rope……. .

It’s just so vindictive. Thanks for the update. As I said, we’re trying to provide assistance for basics by those who are unable to cover sudden changes in circumstances……so far, in private groups this is going well. Others have pre paid for items to be sent next week such and knitted or crochet items, or craft goods such as red safety pins, so that cannot be stopped by NEC. Will you be left with a large bill that may leave you in need of some assistance for your costs for basic items? We might be able to help there.

      • We should be OK; I’m happy to stand good the cost anyway, on the grounds that we (Me & Lauren) were the fundraisers & therefore “in charge” so to speak. If we didn’t have such a tight deadline (Monday 18 5pm to Weds 20 5pm) we might have been able to do something but with 450 donations and an equal number of people who require assistance it’s just not doable (is that even a word!) All I know is I will never, ever, forgive the NEC for this.

Oh that’s why it was planned like this. Obviously the NEC have broken rules by adding agenda items after the meeting had started to disintegrate. Obviously those who left, including Corbyn would have stated if they realised this was going to happen. I wonder who could look into if the meeting was quorate after others had left? I’m probably already suspended after calling the NEXT Stalinist on Twitter. But that wasn’t in the list of naughty words was it? But if you do need to call for some help you have access to my email don’t you? Plus I can put you in touch with our private FB group I think you’d enjoy if you’re not already with us. We have to be string and quick. And there’s strength in unity, although you wouldn’t that no so these days. Good luck. xxxx
